Payment commission
What is payment commission?
Payment commission is a percentage that a gym software platform takes from every payment your members make, charged on top of your subscription. It’s distinct from the processing fee your bank or card provider charges — that one is unavoidable. The platform’s cut is a separate margin, taken for sitting between you and money that was already yours.
How it works
The commission is deducted as payments flow through the platform’s payment layer, so it never appears as a bill. You see the net figure arrive and the subscription line stays reassuringly small.
There are two fees in every transaction, and they’re easy to conflate:
| Who takes it | Typical range | Avoidable? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processing fee | Your bank or card provider | ~1–2.9% + a fixed amount | No — this is the real cost of moving money |
| Platform commission | The gym software vendor | 0–4.99% | Yes. It’s a pricing choice, not a cost. |
The commission scales with your revenue. Your subscription doesn’t. So the better your gym does, the more the arrangement favours the platform.
Commission vs subscription pricing
This is why “free” gym software is often the most expensive option available.
A platform charging nothing per month and 4.99% per transaction costs a gym processing $20,000 a month about $1,058 monthly — roughly $12,700 a year, from a product advertised as free. A $249 subscription with no commission costs $249.
The test: work out what you’d pay at your current revenue, then at double it. If the number doubles, you’re not buying software — you’re giving away a share of the business.
Why it matters for your gym
Commission is charged on revenue, not profit. A gym running a 15% margin and paying 4% of revenue is handing over more than a quarter of its profit, on money it already earned from members it already recruited.
It also punishes exactly the outcomes you’re working towards. Raise your prices, retain better, sell more memberships — and your software bill rises in lockstep, for no additional service.
How PATO handles it
We take no commission on member payments. You connect your own payment account, pay your processor at their rate, and we never sit in the middle. Our price is our subscription — it doesn’t move when your revenue does.
Common questions
- Isn’t some percentage always necessary?
- Your processor’s fee, yes. Your software vendor’s cut, no — it’s a pricing model, not a cost of doing business.
- How do I find out what I’m paying now?
- Compare your gross member billings against what actually lands in your account, then subtract your processor’s published rate. The gap is the platform’s cut.
- Is commission ever the better deal?
- For a very small gym, briefly — a percentage of little is little. It inverts fast as you grow, and by then switching is a migration.
