Performance benchmark

What is a performance benchmark?

A performance benchmark is a repeatable test your gym uses to measure member progress — a strength lift, a timed distance, whatever your gym benchmarks on. Members retest periodically and their scores are tracked over time, so improvement is visible rather than assumed.

How it works

You define the tests. They’re your standards, not ours.

Members record scores, and estimates like one-rep max and aerobic fitness are worked out from the entry so nobody’s doing arithmetic on a whiteboard.

Everything is kept. A member sees their own history; you see the room.

Why it matters for your gym

Members quit because they can’t tell it’s working. Not because it isn’t — because six weeks of effort feels identical to six weeks of nothing when the only evidence is the mirror.

A benchmark chart is the evidence. It’s the most persuasive retention argument available, and it’s one you already have — most gyms are running tests and losing the results to whiteboards and notebooks.

For a CrossFit box or performance gym, benchmarks are the culture and the retesting week is an event. Elsewhere they’re underused, and they’re the clearest proof a member has that the money is doing something.

Common questions

Do I have to use your tests?
No. You define your own.
Can members see the whole gym’s scores?
They see their own history. Leaderboards are separate and you control them.
How often should members retest?
Every eight to twelve weeks is common — long enough for change, short enough to stay motivating.
