Duck health
What is duck health?
Duck health is the state of PATO — the duck in the member app — and it reflects a member’s own consistency. Train and log regularly and he thrives. Go quiet and he visibly doesn’t. It’s a status indicator with a personality attached.
Why a duck
Because accountability from software reads as nagging, and accountability from a cartoon doesn’t.
A notification saying “you haven’t logged in five days” is a criticism. A duck looking sorry for himself is the same information with none of the sting — the member draws the conclusion themselves, which is the only way that conclusion ever changes behaviour.
It never guilt-trips. The mechanic carries the accountability so the character doesn’t have to, which is a deliberate design decision rather than a happy accident.
Why it matters for your gym
It sounds trivial. It’s the single most-commented-on thing in the product.
People protect streaks. Once a member has kept the duck healthy for forty days, the cost of a missed week isn’t abstract any more — it’s visible, and it’s theirs.
The commercial version: members who log daily open the app daily, and members who open the app daily are members you can reach.
Common questions
- Can members turn it off?
- They can ignore it. Plenty do, and they use everything else normally.
- Is it just a streak counter?
- A streak counter tells you a number. This gives the number something to happen to.
- Does it ever punish?
- No. It reflects, and it recovers as soon as they do.
